Wenzhou Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Wenzhou Biomaterials and Engineering Research Institute)

Established in May 2019, the Wenzhou Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (formerly the Wenzhou Institute of Biomaterials and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, which was jointly founded in 2011 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the People's Government of Zhejiang Province, and the People's Government of Wenzhou City) is dedicated to promoting the transformation of scientific and technological achievements through basic research innovation. The institute focuses on research with significant clinical application prospects, including medical biomaterials, intelligent medical equipment, biomedical physics, translational medicine, and precision medicine. It strives to build an internationally advanced innovation center and a technology transfer center integrating "materials, drugs, devices, and medicine."
The institute is fully committed to building a high-end talent team. Since May 2019, it has reached cooperation intentions with multiple academicians and recruited numerous outstanding researchers from Harvard University and the University of Cambridge. It now has over 50 research teams and more than 300 researchers. The institute is making every effort to tackle key technologies in the field of life and health, and has established a full-chain model for achievement transformation that integrates incubation, acceleration, pilot testing, and industrialization. Several representative achievements have entered clinical trials or financing stages, and multiple cooperation agreements have been signed with enterprises in Wenzhou.
The Public Technical Service Center of the institute is equipped with advanced scientific instruments in research areas such as biomedical materials, nanotechnology, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and medical devices. The center's equipment total value exceeds 100 million yuan, including state-of-the-art transmission electron microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, Micro-CT, confocal laser scanning microscopes, Raman spectrometers, and other large precision instruments. In 2017, the institute was approved as the Zhejiang Provincial Engineering Research Center for Clinical Functional Materials and Diagnostic and Therapeutic Devices; in 2020, it was approved as the Zhejiang Provincial Engineering Research Center for Tissue Repair Materials; and in 2021, it was recognized as a new type of R&D institution in Zhejiang Province. The new campus building, covering 31 mu of land with a total floor area of 58,000 square meters, has been in use since October 2020.
The Wenzhou Institute plans to cultivate and introduce a research team of no fewer than 500 people, with high-level talents as the core, within five years; and to build itself into an international top-tier new research institution integrating basic research, applied research, development services, achievement transformation, industry cultivation, education and training, and academic exchange within the same period.
