Donghua University is a university directly under the Ministry of Education and a member of the national "Project 211" and the national "Double First-Class" initiative. Adhering to the motto of "Striving for Virtue and Erudition, Aspiring for Aspiration and Practice," the university has continued to forge ahead and has developed into a distinctive, multidisciplinary, high-level university with strengths in textiles, materials, fashion, and design. The university's history dates back to 1912, when the industrialist Zhang Jian founded the Textile Dyeing and Weaving Training Institute. It was established in 1951 as East China Institute of Textile Science and Technology. In 1960, it was designated by the Ministry of Education as a national key university. In 1981, it became one of China's first universities authorized to confer doctoral, master's, and bachelor's degrees. In 1985, it was renamed China Textile University. In 1998, it joined the ranks of the national "Project 211" key construction universities. In 1999, it was renamed Donghua University. In 2017, it was selected as a national "Double First-Class" construction university. The university is located in Shanghai, China, with three campuses: Songjiang Campus, Yan'an Road Campus, and Xinhua Road Campus, covering an area of nearly 2,000 mu, with a total building area of more than 830,000 square meters. The university is a "Shanghai Garden Unit" and a "Shanghai Civilized Campus." Songjiang Campus is a * water conservancy scenic area. The university has 2,320 faculty and staff, including 1,416 full-time teachers, among whom are 2 full-time academicians, 14 part-time academicians, more than 50 high-level talents such as Ten Thousand Talents Program scholars, Changjiang Scholars, and National Outstanding Young Scientists, and more than 900 teachers with other senior professional titles. The university has 14,244 undergraduates, 7,892 master's students, 1,265 doctoral students, and 705 international students pursuing academic degrees. The university currently has 17 colleges (departments), with 6 postdoctoral mobile stations, 10 first-level doctoral degree programs, 2 doctoral professional degree authorization categories, 29 first-level master's degree programs, 17 master's professional degree authorization categories, and 56 undergraduate majors, covering nine disciplines: engineering, science, management, economics, art, literature, law, history, and education. Textile Science and Engineering has been rated A+ for three consecutive times. Five disciplines—Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, Computer Science, and Environment/Ecology—are in the top 1% of ESI worldwide. The university has 1 national key first-level discipline, 5 national key second-level disciplines, 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, 7 Shanghai first-class disciplines, and 1 Shanghai university Class I peak discipline. It has 1 national key laboratory, 1 national engineering technology research center, 20 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms, 2 national "111" intelligence introduction bases, and a national university science park. The university's fundamental task is to cultivate socialist builders and successors with all-round development in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor. It adheres to the fine school spirit of "rigor, diligence, truth-seeking, and innovation" and cultivates high-quality talents with a broad foundation, strong practical ability, innovative spirit, and social responsibility. The university actively builds an education system of "simultaneous development of five educations" and constructs an undergraduate training system of "tiered teaching, differentiated cultivation, diverse success, and success for all," continuously deepening education and teaching reform. Since the new century, it has won 11 * teaching achievement awards. It has 3 * experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 * virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 3 national engineering practice education centers, 10 * specialty programs, and 11 * first-class undergraduate programs. The graduate employment rate exceeds 96%, salaries rank 16th-21st in China's university graduate salary index, and more than 420 students have started their own businesses. The State Key Laboratory for Modification of Chemical Fibers and Polymer Materials was rated "Excellent," and the National Advanced Functional Fiber Innovation Center and the National Advanced Printing and Dyeing Technology Innovation Center were approved for construction. The university continues to promote industry-education integration, facilitate the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and serve the construction of Shanghai as a City of Design and national economic and social development. The university vigorously promotes the opening-up of education in the new era and actively aligns with the national "Belt and Road" important initiative, jointly establishing the "Belt and Road" World Textile University Alliance with 33 textile-specialized universities from 18 countries. The university has established good cooperative relations with more than 100 well-known universities, research institutions, and enterprises worldwide. It was approved for the Ministry of Education's "China-Africa 20+20 University Cooperation Plan" and established the world's first Confucius Institute with textile and apparel characteristics at Moi University in Kenya. In cooperation with the University of Edinburgh, it founded the Donghua University Shanghai International College of Fashion and Innovation to cultivate world-class fashion and creative talents.
