湖北艺术职业学院创建于1958年，原为湖北省戏曲学校。1988年更名为湖北省艺术学校。1992年与湖北省文化艺术干部学校合并。1993年被湖北省人民政府和文化部确认为“省部级重点中专”。2000年与湖北省电影学校合并，组建成新的“湖北省艺术学校”。2001年被国家教育部确认为“*重点中等职业学校”。1999年与华中师范大学合作办学，成立华中师范大学艺术职业学院。2003年经湖北省人民政府批准成为独立的湖北艺术职业学院。2008年学院顺利通过严格的办学水平评估，被省教育厅正式公布为湖北省高职高专人才培养工作水平评估优秀院校。
