Shanghai Eye & ENT Hospital

The Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University is a tertiary A-level eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) specialist hospital integrating medical care, teaching, and scientific research. Founded in 1952 by nationally designated first-level professors such as Hu Maolian and Guo Bingkuan, the hospital was initially named the Eye and ENT Academy of Shanghai Medical College. In the same year, it was renamed the Eye and ENT Academy of Shanghai First Medical College. In 1955, it was renamed the Eye and ENT Hospital of Shanghai First Medical College. In 1985, it became the Eye and ENT Hospital of Shanghai Medical University. In 2000, when Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University, the hospital was renamed the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University Medical College, and in 2001, it adopted its current name. In 2004, it was granted the title "Shanghai Red Cross Eye and ENT Hospital"; in 2006, it received a second name, "Shanghai Eye and ENT Hospital"; and in 2020, it obtained an internet hospital license. The hospital has eight clinical departments: Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Radiotherapy, Anesthesiology, Emergency, Stomatology, and Nursing, as well as five ancillary medical departments: Radiology, Pathology, Pharmacy, Laboratory Medicine, and Nutrition. The Fenyang campus, located at No. 83 Fenyang Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai, covers an area of 33 mu. In 2002, the Baoqing Road branch was established, covering 2.4 mu and affiliated with the Fenyang campus. In 2017, the Pujiang campus at No. 2600 Jiangyue Road, Minhang District, Shanghai, began operation. Covering 100 mu, it is under unified management with the Fenyang campus, providing homogeneous services. The hospital has 894 approved beds, with 733 beds actually open. In 2019, the total outpatient visits exceeded 2.48 million, and over 140,000 surgical operations were performed, with medical services reaching patients nationwide. As of the end of 2019, the hospital had 1,289 employees, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one chief scientist of the National Basic Research Program (973 Program), three Changjiang Distinguished Professors and Chair Professors, three recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, three recipients of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, one national "Ten Thousand Talents Plan" scientific and technological innovation leading talent, and two young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in health and family planning. Among them, there are 168 physicians with senior professional titles, 41 doctoral supervisors, and 55 master's supervisors. Both the Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology departments are national key disciplines and national key clinical specialties. In the "Chinese Hospital Specialty Ranking" released by the Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University, the Otorhinolaryngology department has ranked first for ten consecutive years, while Ophthalmology has consistently ranked among the top three. The hospital is a national drug clinical trial institution and a medical device clinical trial institution, hosting the National Health Commission Key Laboratory of Auditory Medicine, the National Health Commission Key Laboratory of Myopia, and the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Visual Impairment and Reconstruction. It is also the Shanghai Auditory Medicine Clinical Center, the Shanghai Ophthalmology Clinical Quality Control Center, and the Shanghai Ophthalmic Optics Research Center. It serves as a standardized training base for residents in both the national and Shanghai programs and provides standardized training for specialists in ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, and anesthesiology in Shanghai. In 2016, the hospital established two research institutes for ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology, integrating resources to build a robust research platform and achieve integrated clinical and translational research. In 2019, a Clinical Research and Translation Promotion Center was established to accelerate clinical research and facilitate the translation of findings into practice. The number of research projects at all levels undertaken by the hospital has increased year by year, including projects under the National Key Basic Research (973) Program and major national R&D plans. The hospital has won multiple second prizes of the National Invention Award and the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and has published numerous academic papers in the Nature series of top international journals. Since its establishment, the hospital has been awarded the title of "Shanghai Civilized Unit" eight times.
