Shanghai General Hospital (Shanghai General Hospital) was founded on March 1, 1864, making it one of the earliest comprehensive century-old hospitals nationwide. In 1877, it was renamed Gongji Hospital; in 1981, it was designated as Shanghai Red Cross Hospital; in 1992, it became one of the first batch of Class A tertiary comprehensive hospitals in China; in 2002, it was affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University as its First People's Hospital; and on January 24, 2022, it was further affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. In 2006, the hospital actively promoted the balanced distribution of high-quality medical resources by establishing a branch in Songjiang District, inaugurating a new pattern of development. Currently, the hospital is rated as a National Civilized Unit and a Shanghai Civilized Unit, having received numerous honors including National Top 100 Hospitals, Advanced Unit of National Health System, National Advanced Unit for Spiritual Civilization Development, National Model Red Cross Unit, National Advanced Unit for Medical Ethics Development, National Advanced Unit for Hospital Culture Development, and National May Day Labor Medal. In 2021, it ranked 19th among comprehensive hospitals nationwide in the national performance assessment of tertiary public hospitals. In 2022, it was selected as a pilot unit for high-quality development of public hospitals in Shanghai, and was approved as one of the first batch of potential units for AI-assisted diagnostic medical device clinical trial centers under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as well as a Shanghai AI-assisted diagnostic medical device evaluation platform and a Shanghai medical technology transfer and transformation service institution.
The hospital consists of two sites, Hongkou and Songjiang, covering an area of approximately 453.8 mu. In 2022, outpatient and emergency visits reached 4.2282 million, discharged patients numbered 100,900, inpatient surgeries totaled 65,700, with a Level IV surgery rate of 29.48%, minimally invasive surgery rate of 21.56%, and average hospital stay of 6.27 days, all indicators ranking at the leading level in Shanghai. The average cost per visit remained at the average level of similar hospitals.
Over the past 158 years, the hospital has consistently held a leading position in the national and municipal health systems. It has been home to numerous renowned medical experts, including Le Wenzhao, Ren Tinggui, Hu Maolian, Lin Yuanying, Zhao Dongsheng, Zhang Jingren, Cai Xiaosun, Xie Tong, Zhang Xi, Zhuang Xinliang, Tang Xiaoda, and Xiao Mingdi, who made significant contributions in the mid-to-late 20th century. They achieved many domestic firsts, such as the first hepatic lobectomy, the first toe-to-thumb transplantation, the first acupuncture anesthesia surgery, the development of the first domestic cardiac vector diagram recorder, and the prototype of the first domestic temporary cardiac pacemaker.
The hospital currently houses 1 National Clinical Research Center, 1 Key Discipline of the Ministry of Education, 8 National Key Clinical Specialty Construction Projects, as well as multiple Shanghai Clinical Medical Centers, emergency centers, leading key medical disciplines, key laboratories, medical quality control centers, and ophthalmic research institutes. In recent years, the hospital has focused on promoting the integrated development of its two sites, launching a new round of "Peak, Summit, and Plateau" key discipline development. On the basis of establishing ophthalmology and urology clinical medical centers, it has newly established five clinical medical centers for orthopedics, general surgery, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, and interventional therapy. It has also established a Clinical Research Institute, actively conducting collaborations with research institutions and enterprises such as the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai University, Yuanneng Cell, MicroPort, United Imaging, Aosheng, and Airdoc, intensifying research and development in medical-engineering integration and medical artificial intelligence. In 2022, the ophthalmology department ranked 6th nationwide in STEM and 8th in the Fudan rankings. Urology, as the leading unit in Shanghai, applied for a National Clinical Research Center, and its STEM ranking remained 2nd nationwide.
In recent years, the hospital has vigorously developed innovative technologies. It has successfully performed the first domestic MAKO robot-assisted minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty, the first domestic three-dimensional reconstruction-assisted extended sleeve pneumonectomy, the first domestic intracardiac echocardiography-guided interventional closure of paravalvular leak of mitral and aortic prosthetic valves, the first domestic fourth-generation Da Vinci robotic single-port gastric tumor resection, the first Shanghai KODEX-EPD three-dimensional mapping system-mediated cryoablation for atrial fibrillation, and the first Shanghai successful interventional treatment of cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistula via the superior ophthalmic vein, among a total of 32 pioneering innovative technologies. The diagnosis and treatment model has been continuously optimized. The hospital has promoted an integrated emergency and critical care system supported by 5G and a general coordinator system, taking the lead in establishing the medical-police collaborative "North Bund Emergency Alliance". Its chest pain center ranks first among municipal hospital chest pain centers. The gastrointestinal tumor MDT center has been authorized and certified by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association / China Tumor MDT Alliance. The hepatobiliary surgery department has been designated as a National Demonstration Ward for Hepatobiliary Surgery. The emergency department has been approved as a National Demonstration Center for Rapid Treatment of Acute Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding (only 10 nationwide). The pregnancy endocrine clinic has been awarded as an "Outstanding Case of Multidisciplinary Outpatient Construction in Shanghai". Medical services have continuously improved. The hospital has built a five-party linkage service model involving "medical, nursing, rehabilitation, social work, and volunteers", and has received the "National 100 Best Volunteer Service Projects for Learning from Lei Feng" and the "2021 Shanghai Advanced Collective for Volunteer Services". In 2022, it made breakthroughs in major research projects, leading 3 key R&D projects under the Ministry of Science and Technology, with a total funding of 50 million RMB, ranking first among medical institutions in Shanghai. Its publication record reached a new high, with 576 SCI papers published as corresponding or first author units, including 48 original articles in journals with impact factors greater than 10 such as Cell Research, Radiology, and Science Translational Medicine.
The hospital has achieved remarkable results in talent development and education. The hospital currently has 20 national bases for standardized residency training, 3 national bases for specialist physician training, and 24 municipal bases. Its first-time pass rate for residency completion exams ranks first among Class A tertiary general hospitals in Shanghai. The emergency (department) and rehabilitation bases have been rated as national key specialty bases. The hospital has 106 doctoral supervisors, 152 master's supervisors, 27 doctoral programs, 27 postdoctoral mobile stations, and 37 master's programs. It represented China in the evaluation of the World Federation for Medical Education, passed the evaluation with high quality, received international recognition, and was rated as an exemplary clinical teaching training demonstration center (cultivation) unit.
The hospital has always regarded continuous quality improvement as its core management goal.
