China is an important strategic market for all of Merck's business sectors, including Performance Materials, Life Science, and Healthcare. Merck has nearly 3,500 employees in China (including Hong Kong and Macau). There are 20 corporate entities in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Wuxi, Suzhou, and Nantong. Merck has made significant investments in China. Recently, Merck has invested 170 million euros in its Healthcare and Life Science businesses in Nantong, 80 million euros in its Performance Materials business in Shanghai, and 44 million euros in the same sector. Additionally, Merck has established a global biopharmaceutical R&D center in Beijing, a display materials R&D center and a life science laboratory in Shanghai, and a lithography materials R&D center in Suzhou. China has become an important source of innovation for Merck.
