昭通市实验中学于1957年在凤池书院旧址上建立，时称昭通地区第三中学。1987年经省教育厅批准更名为昭通地区实验中学，2001年昭通撤地建市，更名为昭通市实验中学。1994年9月被评为二级一等完全中学，2009年9月1日，学校整体搬迁至环湖北路新校区，2010年11月被评定为一级三等完全中学。学校占地面积245.52亩，学校建筑面积84289?，总投资2.2亿元。
学校现有在职在编教师304人，其中高级职称98人（特级教师3人），中级职称106人，初级教师84人。学校现有80个教学班，其中初中15个教学班，高中65个教学班，在校学生5076人。
