In 1865, urban gas in Shanghai emerged, pioneering the development of urban public utilities.
At the end of 2003, Shanghai Gas (Group) Co., Ltd. was established, and is currently one of the leading comprehensive urban gas operators in China, integrating natural gas pipeline network investment, construction and operation, natural gas procurement, transmission, distribution, dispatching, sales, services and trading, LPG operations, and gas-related extended services. Its business coverage spans central urban areas of Shanghai and Jinshan, Qingpu, Chongming, etc., with equity participation in regional gas sales companies in Songjiang and Fengxian. Its local gas market share in Shanghai exceeds 90%. At the end of 2018, the Gas Group was split into Shanghai Gas Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Gas (Group) Co., Ltd., focusing on natural gas business and natural gas synergistic business, respectively. By the end of 2018, Shanghai Gas Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Gas (Group) Co., Ltd. together had more than 7,100 employees, total assets of 27 billion yuan, annual operating revenue of 23.2 billion yuan, and net profit attributable to the parent company of 760 million yuan.
