Hunan Sano Biotechnology Co., Ltd. is primarily engaged in the research, development, and preparation of xenogeneic cell transplantation products, and the company possesses a high-level R&D team. In the field of xenotransplantation, it has carried out close collaborative research with the Institute of Cell Transplantation and Gene Therapy of Central South University (Central South University holds part of the company's state-owned equity).
The company currently occupies 50 mu in the Xiangjiang New Area of Changsha High-tech Zone. In August 2012, it established the Asia-Pacific region's first medical-grade (DPF) donor pig breeding base with independent intellectual property rights that meets World Health Organization standards, and simultaneously established a cGMP-standard cell preparation center, having initially covered the complete industrial chain of medical-grade donor pig breeding, farming, donor cell preparation, standard formulation and management, preclinical research on transplantation technology, and clinical application and development. The company currently possesses its own brand of inbred donor pig line specifically for islet cell transplantation -- "Xeno-1" (the first pig breed in China that meets DPF standard testing), and on this basis has developed the humanized genetically modified pig "Xeno-2" specifically for islet cell transplantation.
The company owns all intellectual property rights to the complete technical system for treating type 1 diabetes through transplantation of porcine islet cells via the hepatic artery and portal vein. The company currently holds eight national invention patents related to porcine islet transplantation and DPF donor pigs, and has successfully completed a small-sample clinical study on porcine islet transplantation for treating type 1 diabetes in cooperation with the Third Xiangya Hospital. The comprehensive efficacy index of early cases reached the best level internationally at the same period, and the company will gradually enter the track of industrialization in the future.
The company has engaged top international xenotransplantation scientists (including xenotransplantation experts from the United States and Australia and the current president of the International Xenotransplantation Association) as scientific advisors, greatly enhancing the company's R&D strength. The project "Key Technologies and Demonstration of Biosafety in Xenotransplantation" cooperated with Central South University reached an advanced level and was awarded the First Prize of the 2015 Hunan Provincial Technology Invention Award.
In early June 2016, Sano Biotechnology was officially listed on the National Equities Exchange and Quotations system, with securities code 836907, and has completed Series A financing.
In August 2017, Sano Biotechnology invested more than 10 million yuan to build the approximately 1,800-square-meter internationally first-class biological research institute -- Hunan Sano Biotechnology Research Institute -- at the Gutebang Entrepreneurship Base in Changsha National High-tech Industrial Development Zone. This is China's first research institute specializing in xenotransplantation research. The institute houses a 240-square-meter GMP cell preparation center, including a ThermoFisher controlled-rate freezer and a liquid nitrogen storage system with a capacity of 10,000 samples; in addition, it has a series of fully imported advanced equipment such as the BD FACSMelodyTM flow cytometer cell sorter, BD FACSCelestaTM flow cytometer, Seahorse XFe cell energy metabolism analysis system, CliniMACS cell sorting system, and Leica histological analysis system. In addition to Professor Wang Wei, the director, the core members of the institute include Professor Yi Shounan, an Australian-returnee expert who previously served as the clinical research project leader for stem cell therapy at Johnson & Johnson in the United States, a principal research fellow at the University of Sydney, the chief scientist of transplant immunology and director of the xenotransplantation and immune cell therapy laboratory at the Sydney University Transplant and Renal Research Center, and now the chief scientist of Sano Biotechnology Research Institute; as well as Cao Qi, an Australian University of Sydney returnee and "Young Thousand Talents" expert introduced by the Institute of Cell Transplantation and Gene Therapy of Central South University under the National "Young Overseas High-level Talents" program, who serves as the technical director of Sano Biotechnology Research Institute.
