Shanghai Institute of University of Science and Technology of China is a new-type research institute founded in Shanghai by University of Science and Technology of China, officially established on July 30, 2004. With academician Pan Jianwei as the research leader, the institute has gathered a talented team with a reasonable structure, multidisciplinary integration, complementary advantages, and close collaboration.
The institute has established multiple research platforms, with research conditions reaching internationally advanced levels. Its research achievements have been selected multiple times as major annual progress in international physics, the top ten news in basic research of the year by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the top ten progress in science and technology of Chinese universities.
In April 2009, the internationally outstanding young scientist Pan Jianwei's quantum team moved into the Shanghai Institute, and the "Quantum Engineering Center" was formally established, marking an important first step in the strategic plan of the National Microscale Laboratory to expand to Shanghai. The center brings together a research team of over 30 members from Heidelberg University in Germany and top domestic and international talents, all young and introduced through national programs such as the "Changjiang Scholars" Plan. The research areas of the Quantum Engineering Center are quantum optics and quantum information, with research directions including testing fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, fiber-based quantum communication, free-space quantum communication, quantum storage and quantum repeaters, optical quantum computing, superconducting quantum computing, ultracold atom quantum simulation, quantum precision measurement, and related theoretical research. The center has built numerous experimental platforms and established a comprehensive set of analytical detection equipment and methods related to quantum information experimental research, with research conditions at an internationally advanced level.
