2015年9月7日国务院批复同意设立云南滇中新区。云南滇中新区设立后，中国*新区将扩容至15个，此前的14个分别是，上海浦东新区、天津滨海新区、重庆两江新区、浙江舟山群岛新区、甘肃兰州新区、广东南沙新区、陕西西咸新区、贵州贵安新区、青岛西海岸新区、大连金普新区、四川天府新区、湖南湘江新区、南京江北新区和福州新区。云南滇中新区同时也是今年国务院批准设立的第4个*新区。
2015年9月15日，中国政府网发布《国务院关于同意设立云南滇中新区的批复》（国函〔2015〕141号）称，同意设立云南滇中新区[1]。
