Vimicro Electronics was founded in Zhongguancun, Beijing, by several Silicon Valley Ph.D. entrepreneurs with the proposal and support of the Ministry of Information Industry of China. Vimicro Electronics is dedicated to developing advanced digital multimedia technology and has successfully launched the 'Starlight Series' chip products into both domestic and international markets, which are applied in fast-growing technology fields such as computers, broadband, mobile communications, and information appliances. Its products have been adopted in large quantities by internationally renowned companies such as Samsung, Philips, HP, Fujitsu, and Lenovo. In order to explore the huge multimedia communication market, Vimicro Electronics has formed strategic alliances with China Telecom, China Netcom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Microsoft, and others, and has undertaken several major projects from the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Information Industry, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Commerce. With the support of the Ministry of Information Industry, Vimicro Electronics is actively participating in research and formulation of China's mobile and broadband multimedia VXP application standards.

Vimicro's headquarters are in Beijing, with branch offices in Silicon Valley, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong, currently employing over 400 people.
