八寨镇位于七星关区东北部，距离市区19公里，厦蓉高速公路和106省道道穿境而过，是黔西北进入四川的重要通道。东接层台镇，南连海子街镇，西邻田坝桥、对坡镇，北毗燕子口镇。平均海拔1620米，属亚热带季风湿润气候，平均降雨量954毫米，无霜期250天左右。全镇辖15个行政村，116个村民组，33516人，居住着汉、苗、彝、白、蒙古等5个民族，其中少数民族人口4000余人。
