The Export-Import Bank of China is a state-owned policy bank directly under the leadership of the State Council and funded by the state, established in 1994. It plays a significant role in supporting China's foreign economic and trade investment development and international economic cooperation. Its establishment originated from the decision made at the Third Plenary Session of the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1993 to establish policy banks and form an import and export credit bank. In its early days, it undertook concessional loans for foreign aid and on-lending business, and later expanded its operations in different phases. In 2001, following China's accession to the WTO, it adjusted its business focus and introduced concessional export buyer's credit and import credit. In 2005, it established a strategic positioning to transform into an international economic cooperation bank. Since then, it has continued to carry out financial innovation, designing and developing innovative products and services such as overseas on-lending. In international business, its Paris Branch was inaugurated in 2013, marking the first operating branch established overseas. As of the end of 2023, it had established bilateral correspondent banking relationships with 1,042 domestic and foreign financial institutions, covering 142 countries and regions worldwide. Its business covers export credit, concessional foreign loans, and on-lending of foreign government loans, supporting 'going global' projects including exports of high-tech products, overseas processing trade, and foreign contracted projects. It has received multiple awards from institutions such as China Central Depository & Clearing Co., Ltd., Shanghai Stock Exchange, and Shenzhen Stock Exchange. It plays an irreplaceable and important role in promoting Chinese enterprises' participation in international economic cooperation, facilitating balanced trade development, and enhancing the country's economic competitiveness.
