Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd., formerly known as Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company, was founded in 1958. At that time, it was the Shanghai Underground Railway Preparation Office and the Cross-River Tunnel Research Institute. In 1965, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company was established, making it the first professional company in China dedicated to the construction and development of municipal projects involving soft soil tunnels and underground works. In November 1993, the company was restructured into a joint-stock enterprise upon approval.
