The company, formerly known as Shandong International Power Development Company Limited, was jointly established on June 28, 1994, in Jinan City, Shandong Province, China, by Shandong Electric Power, Shandong Provincial International Trust and Investment Corporation (formerly renamed as Shandong Provincial International Trust and Investment Co., Ltd., now known as Shandong International Trust Co., Ltd.), China Electric Power Trust and Investment Co., Ltd., Shandong Luneng Development Corporation (formerly renamed as Shandong Luneng Group Corporation, Shandong Luneng Group Co., Ltd., now known as Shandong Luneng Development Group Co., Ltd.), and Zaozhuang Capital Construction Investment Company. On June 1999, the company successfully listed its 1,431,028,000 overseas H-shares on The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited.
According to the resolution passed at the shareholders' meeting on June 24, 2003, the company's name was changed from "Shandong International Power Development Company Limited" to "Huadian Power International Corporation Limited", and on November 1, 2003, it obtained the updated enterprise legal person business license with the approval number Qi Gu Lu Zong Zi No. 003922.
The company was approved by the China Securities Regulatory Commission in January 2005 (document No. Zheng Jian Fa Xing Zi [2005] No. 2) to issue A-shares, and was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on February 3, 2005.
