新步小学创办于1931年，1997年，爱国华侨吴家熊先生与其兄吴家辇先生共同出资500多万元，征用村边的荒地建设建新校园， 1999年春季搬入使用。新校址占地18667平方米，总建筑面积3830平方米。2015年，南益集团捐资2000万，投入学校扩建改造工程。扩建项目拟建设综合楼2幢，总建设面积约9000平方米。目前，新步小学有在职教师37人，拥有一支师德高尚、素质优良、业务精湛、爱岗敬业的教师队伍，各级骨干教师16名，小学高级教师18名。学校现有22个教学班，有学生1156人。
