CIMC was founded in 1980 and is one of China's earliest professional container manufacturers and one of the earliest Sino-foreign joint ventures. It was initially a joint venture between China Merchants Group of Hong Kong and East Asiatic Company of Denmark. In 1987, it was restructured into a tripartite joint venture among COSCO, China Merchants Group, and East Asiatic Company. In 1993, it was restructured into a public joint-stock company, and in 1994, it was listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. CIMC is headquartered in Shenzhen, China, and has over 100 wholly-owned and controlled subsidiaries domestically and overseas, with more than 58,000 Chinese and foreign employees. CIMC focuses on providing equipment and services for modern transportation and is a major global supplier of containers, road transport vehicles, tank storage and transport equipment, and airport equipment manufacturing and sales services.

Shenzhen Southern CIMC Container Manufacturing Co., Ltd. — the predecessor and wholly-owned subsidiary of CIMC Group — officially commenced production on September 22, 1982, in the Shekou Industrial Zone of Shenzhen. It is one of China's earliest professional container manufacturers and one of the earliest Sino-foreign joint ventures. The company has a registered capital of USD 17.6 million, total assets exceeding USD 270 million, annual output value of nearly USD 660 million, and nearly 4,000 employees.

Southern CIMC is the world's largest professional manufacturer of dry cargo containers and has maintained the world's largest dry container output for 15 consecutive years, ranking first in the industry in total manufacturing volume. Currently, there are two enterprises: Shenzhen Southern CIMC Eastern Logistics Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (referred to as Southern CIMC Eastern Factory) and Dongguan Southern CIMC Logistics Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (referred to as Southern CIMC Fenggang Factory).

Southern CIMC is the world's largest dry cargo container manufacturer, providing various specifications of international standard dry cargo containers to more than 70 customers in over 20 countries and regions worldwide, such as 20'GP, 40'GP, 40'HC, 45'HC, and hanging garment containers, with an annual production capacity exceeding 700,000 TEU. Since 1996, Southern CIMC's dry container output has consistently ranked first in the world.
