湖南武陵源索道有限公司成立于1995年12月7日，武陵源区人民政府和香港安达国际度假乐园（张家界）有限公司签约，是由香港安达国际有限公司投资的外商独资企业。1996年6月动工兴建天子山索道，1997年5月正式对外营运。天子山索道是单线循环式脱挂抱索器客运索道，全部设备自奥地利Doppelmayr公司进口。设计水平线1960m，斜线长2084m，两端站高差692m。配单线自动循环车厢41个，每车厢载6人，运速5m／s，每小时单向运量900人。索道动力电，采用双电源；配备有应急备用柴油机，用于停电或发生设备事故时紧急疏散游客。公司新购5辆环保大巴客运车，为游客免费提供索道上站至天子山贺龙公园的客运服务。工程投资8000多万元人民币。1996年6月28日动工，1997年5月19日开通营运。
