Beijing Automotive Powertrain Co., Ltd. is a wholly state-owned subsidiary funded by BAIC Group (formerly BAIC Holding Company). Its predecessor was the Powertrain Branch of BAIC Holding Company, established on August 6, 2009, and officially changed to Beijing Automotive Powertrain Co., Ltd. on February 9, 2010. It serves as a specialized powertrain platform for the group development of Beijing Automotive.
The company comprehensively plans, implements, and manages the powertrain business of Beijing Automotive's own brands, integrating R&D, design, and manufacturing of automotive engines and transmissions as a whole. It always adheres to "cultivating a first-class team, creating first-class products, and building a first-class enterprise," and is accelerating the establishment of a world-class modern production and R&D base. It is committed to turning its own-brand powertrain into "China's heart, the world's engine," providing important guarantees for Beijing Automotive's independent development and the cultivation of a national automotive brand!
The production base of the Powertrain Company is currently under construction, located in the East District of Tongzhou Economic Development Zone, Beijing. The total land area of the project under construction is 1,559 mu, of which construction land covers about 1,000 mu, planning an R&D office area, engine production area, transmission production area, living area, and related supporting facilities. The total planned investment in the factory construction is 10 billion yuan. By 2015, it will have an annual capacity of 400,000 advanced gasoline engines, 300,000 CVT transmissions, and 300,000 MT transmissions, becoming an integrated, modularized, and world-class powertrain base that integrates R&D, design, and manufacturing.
On August 28, 2009, BAIC Group signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Bosch for the CVT (continuously variable transmission) project, marking a substantial step in Beijing Automotive's independent R&D based on world-class Bosch CVT technology. The Powertrain Company undertakes the heavy responsibility of project development. After the project is completed, BAIC Group will master CVT development technology resources and possess the technical strength to independently develop a new generation of CVT with independent intellectual property rights, making it one of the few enterprises in China with world-leading automatic transmission development technology.
On December 14, 2009, BAIC Group successfully acquired the core technology assets of the globally renowned brand—Sweden's Saab. Since BAIC's successful acquisition of Saab's intellectual property and assets, the Powertrain Company has made rapid progress in digesting and absorbing Saab powertrain technology. Within one year, it achieved 100% localized self-owned parts for Saab engine assembly and ignition, fully digesting and absorbing Saab engine technology.
At the end of 2010, Beijing Automotive Powertrain Co., Ltd. successfully acquired Saab's original transmission factory—Weigel (Vigel) Transmission Plant, marking a new breakthrough in BAIC's own-brand powertrain development.
