四方机厂始建于1900年10月，是为装配和修理胶济铁路的机车车辆而创建。 解放后，四方厂直属中央人民政府铁道部，后分别隶属*机械工业部、铁道部机车车辆工业管理总局、交通部工业局、铁道部工业局、中国铁路机车车辆工业总公司。现隶属中国南方机车车辆工业集团公司 1986 年 7 月 21 日，铁道部四方机车车辆工厂客车分厂奠基仪式在崂山区棘洪滩镇举行。 2002年7月22日，经国家经济贸易委员会 《国经贸企改 [2002]195号文》批准，四方机车车辆厂改制为两个独立的规范企业：南车四方机车车辆股份有限公司 四方机车车辆有限责任公司
