Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine

Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is located in the Huangpu hinterland, a place of innovation, cultural convergence, and inclusiveness, with red walls against the sun and surrounded by plane trees. Its predecessor was Shanghai Second Medical College, formed in 1952 through the merger of St. John's University School of Medicine (1896-1952), Aurora University School of Medicine (1911-1952), and Tongde Medical College (1918-1952) during the nationwide adjustment of higher education institutions. In 1985, it was renamed Shanghai Second Medical University. In 1997, the school passed the "211 Project" approval. In July 2005, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Second Medical University merged to establish the new Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, jointly and emphatically constructed by the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal Government, and it entered the ranks of "985" universities. In November 2010, the School became one of the first batch of ten key universities co-constructed by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. With seventy years of melodious songs and glorious medical journeys, after more than a hundred years of flourishing and seventy years of stormy journeys, the School adheres to its motto "Exploring the sources of medicine with diligence and perseverance" and the spirit of "embracing all rivers, seeking truth and pragmatism, upholding integrity and innovation, and dedicating with sincerity." It always takes as its mission to seek the prosperity of the country, pursue scientific truth, and practice the sanctity of medicine, advancing with the times, sharing the destiny of the motherland, and breathing with the people, leaving a profound mark on the magnificent picture of healthcare, and cultivating more than 70,000 medical talents for society. The School has now developed into a research-oriented and innovative institution with a high international reputation, strong faculty, distinctive advantages, and outstanding academic achievements, comprehensively developing medical education, research, and social services. Its comprehensive strength ranks among the top nationwide, and it ranks first among national medical colleges in multiple disciplinary comprehensive rankings. The School currently has two campuses: Huangpu and Minhang. In 2019, the Pudong campus project was officially approved. In 2020, the Pudong campus of SJTU School of Medicine saw a grand groundbreaking. In 2021, the construction of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Hainan International Medical Center project was fully initiated. Over the past century, SJTU School of Medicine has begun its expansion from Puxi to Pudong, integrating from Xintiandi into the international medical park.
