大庆一中始建于1961年，现为黑龙江省首批示范性高中，黑龙江省数学学科基地、黑龙江省文明单位标兵、全国青少年文明礼仪教育示范基地、全国百强中学、全国平安校园示范校、全国教育系统先进集体。现有教职员工1090人，在校学生12210人，设高中部、初中部、外国语学校、奥林学校、三所附属小学，主校园占地面积26.4万平方米，建筑面积14.1万平方米，是一所以发展高中教育为主体，以高标准高质量实施九年义务教育为基础，突出外语特色教育的大规模、现代化集团学校。
