Shekou Container Terminals Co., Ltd. (abbreviated as "SCT") was established in 1989 with a registered capital of HKD 618.201 million. It is the first specialized container terminal in Shenzhen and the earliest Sino-foreign joint venture terminal in mainland China. SCT is currently controlled by China Merchants Port, China's largest public terminal operator (a subsidiary of China Merchants Group, one of the largest central state-owned enterprises by SASAC asset ranking and a Fortune Global 500 company). After more than two decades of development, it has become the flagship terminal of China Merchants Port. In 2018, its container throughput was 5.62 million TEUs, accounting for approximately 20% of the total throughput of Shenzhen Port. Since 2003, it has ranked among China's top 10 container terminals by throughput for many consecutive years. Located on the east bank of the Pearl River Estuary, SCT is an international primary hub terminal for Chinese and foreign cargo owners and carriers conducting logistics and transportation in the Pearl River Delta and South China region. It has opened more than 90 regular international liner routes, connecting to over 180 ports worldwide across the Americas, Europe, the Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, North Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and Africa. All of the world's top 30 international liner companies have opened routes at SCT. Its domestic barge service network covers over 95% of the Pearl River Delta region, and it maintains a competitive advantage in the barge transportation market with its combined services and advanced information technology value-added services.
