2011年12月31日，山东省教育厅批准筹建威海海洋职业学院。学院属全日制公办普通高等职业院校，是中国北方*的一所海洋职业学院。学院按在校生8000人规模进行一次性规划，高标准设计，分期建设，一期工程占地560亩，建筑面积10.7万平方米。2014年正式招生。学院的发展定位是立足威海，面向山东，服务蓝区，为海洋经济发展培养高端技能型人才。学院追求的目标是打造海洋特色鲜明、办学水平一流的高等职业院校，并逐步向海洋经济应用型本科院校发展。
