As a Canadian company with a 109-year history, Wescast Industries Inc. has become the world's largest manufacturer of cast iron exhaust manifolds, turbocharger housings, and exhaust systems for passenger cars and light trucks. The company currently employs approximately 2,000 people worldwide, from seven Wescast plants and seven sales/technical service centers located in North America, Europe, and Asia. With the official registration and establishment of Wescast's wholly-owned subsidiary in China—Wescast Industries (China) Co., Ltd.—in Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone on June 30, 2006, Wescast's global strategic reach formally extended into Asia. As one of the key investment projects introduced by Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone in 2006, Wescast China has a registered capital of US$33 million and a total investment of US$99 million. It is tasked with the major responsibility of expanding Asia-Pacific business in automotive exhaust manifolds, turbocharger housings, manifold-turbocharger assemblies, and catalytic converter shells, and driving Wescast's global business growth. In terms of strategic planning for factory construction, to fully meet customer needs while achieving better local management and effective resource utilization, the company decided to carry out the plant construction project in two phases: the first-phase machining plant is expected to begin production in early 2007, and the second-phase foundry is expected to begin production by the end of 2007. According to the final development plan, the first-phase production volume is expected to be 2 million units of exhaust manifolds and other products, and the second-phase production volume is expected to be 8 million units of exhaust manifolds and other products. After normal production begins, annual sales are expected to reach RMB 1 billion, and the number of employees will reach approximately 800.
