呼张铁路客运专线为双线电气化高速铁路，设计正线全长286公里，其中河北省境内76公里，内蒙古自治区境内210公里。列车设计行车速度为250公里/小时。由铁道主管部门与内蒙古、河北省共同筹资建设，将于2014年开工建设，预计2018年建设完成。该客运专线东起河北省张家口市，经内蒙古乌兰察布市，西至呼和浩特市，除张家口南站外，设有怀安站、兴和北站、乌兰察布站、卓资东站、旗下营南、呼和浩特东6个车站。专线建成后，呼和浩特、包头、鄂尔多斯叁市至北京的时间可缩短至2个到3个小时。
