该项目是中电投集团公司及华中地区*个百万千瓦机组项目，同时也是我国*个以“上大压小”方式核准的百万千瓦机组项目。项目距平煤集团矿区铁路约3.5公里，焦枝铁路和省道231线从厂前经过，交通便利。位居平顶山矿区边缘，地处昭平台水库下游，煤、水资源丰富。具有坑口电站、不占用国铁运力、地质条件好、送出方便等优势。电厂建成后作为华中区域骨干电厂，也是华中电网单机容量*大、效率参数*高、运行经济性好的电厂。
