南阳工业学校始建于1960年，原名南阳农业机械化学校，1994年改为现名，是经河南省人民政府批准成立的一所以工科为主的普通中等职业学校，现为*重点中等职业学校和省级示范性中等职业学校。
建校50年来，学校坚持“特色立校、质量兴校、人才强校”的发展战略，发扬“艰苦创业、无私奉献、不甘示弱、争创一流”的南工精神，办学规模不断扩大，办学条件日臻完善，办学质量持续提高。现已发展成为一所规模适度、结构合理、特色鲜明的综合性工科学校，是南阳理工学院五年制专科教育基地，是豫西南地区公办职业教育领域一颗璀璨的明珠。
