北京航天长征飞行器研究所始建于1971年，作为专门从事空天飞行器有效载荷的总体研制单位，是一家从事航天飞行器设计研制的多专业、多学科的综合性高新技术研究所。长期以来，所肩负着“铸国利剑，鸣镝长天”的神圣使命，为国家战略安全提供着强有力的保障。北京航天长征飞行器研究所主要从事航天飞行器研制、空间智能飞行和返回研究开发、机电一体化技术研究开发、计算机软硬件技术研究开发、数据通讯及网络信息通讯技术研究开发、固投项目等。目前拥有一个全资子公司——北京航天鸣镝科技有限公司。
