In 1902, far-sighted individuals such as Liangjiang Governor Liu Kunyi and Zhang Zhidong, standing at the forefront of the times and pioneering new trends, submitted a memorial to establish Sanjiang Normal College, the predecessor of Nanjing University. Over more than a century, Nanjing University has carried forward its academic legacy and has developed into a renowned institution of higher learning and scientific research both at home and abroad. In 1978, the former State Education Commission (now the Ministry of Education) approved the establishment of the Institute of Environmental Sciences at Nanjing University, making it one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China to carry out teaching and research in environmental disciplines. At present, according to the latest evaluation results from the Ministry of Education, its discipline of "Environmental Science and Engineering" ranks among the top three in the country.
In 2012, to further improve the university's integrated innovation platform for production, education, research, government, and application, and in accordance with the relevant requirements of the national institutional reform of public institutions, the university restructured and established a comprehensive Class-A environmental research, planning, design, and consulting service institution—Nanjing University Environmental Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd. Adhering to the development philosophy of combining practice with scientific research, strictly upholding the values of "responsibility, integrity, public welfare, and innovation" and the quality policy of "being practical, seeking truth, and pursuing excellence," the Institute leverages the advantages of a comprehensive university and is committed to promoting the sustainable development of China's society and economy.
As one of the research institutes with the most comprehensive qualifications in the environmental field in China, the Institute has successively carried out extensive planning, consulting, training, and engineering technology services, providing high-quality services to governments at all levels, various development zones, and thousands of clients including over a hundred Fortune Global 500 companies, and has received high recognition from supervisory departments and all sectors of society. In terms of scientific research, our researchers have conducted in-depth R&D work focusing on key directions such as pollution control and resource utilization technologies, cleaner production technologies, formulation and revision of environmental standards, and environmental safety technologies, and the research results have won multiple awards at provincial, ministerial, municipal, and departmental levels. In addition, the Institute also undertakes the functions of the Secretariat of the Nanjing University Environmental Industry Alumni Association, providing services to more than 2,000 alumni of Nanjing University related to the environmental field at home and abroad.
"Wisdom of the university, green future," rooted in the profound heritage of a century-old institution, the Institute hopes to work hand in hand with everyone to promote harmonious development and embrace a green future with wisdom and technology.
