Guangzhou Elderly Care Institute (also known as Guangzhou Second Elderly Care Institute and Guangzhou Geriatric Hospital)

Guangzhou Elderly Care Institute (also known as Guangzhou Second Elderly Care Institute and Guangzhou Geriatric Hospital) was founded in 1965. It is a public welfare institution directly under the Guangzhou Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau and a national demonstration institution for the integration of medical and elderly care. Guangzhou Geriatric Hospital, established in 2001, is a high-level medical institution featuring geriatric specialties, integrating medical services, scientific research, and teaching. In recent years, the hospital has adhered to the concepts of integrated care and proactive health services, creating a nationally leading digital, intelligent, integrated, and full-cycle new model of medical-elderly care integration. It has preliminarily formed a "five-in-one" geriatric medicine discipline cluster encompassing disease diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation, nursing, scientific research, and health management. Since 2019, with strong support from the municipal party committee, municipal government, and city leaders, the hospital has been undergoing a comprehensive expansion. The planned medical beds total 1,000, constructed in two phases, making it a key livelihood project of the city. The first phase has a total construction area of 130,000 square meters, with 500 medical beds and a total investment of approximately 1.3 billion yuan. The hospital now possesses research platforms including the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Geriatric Medicine and Technological Transformation, the Guangzhou Civil Affairs Science and Technology Collaborative Innovation Center, clinical cohorts, and a biobank. It has established postdoctoral innovation practice bases at both provincial and municipal levels, forming a high-level talent cultivation system for medical professionals from master's to doctoral and postdoctoral levels. It houses a research center of nearly 5,000 square meters and the Guangzhou International Bio Island Laboratory, equipped with platforms for molecular biology, cell biology, pathology experiments, bioinformatics, and optical imaging, as well as first-class domestic instruments and equipment, providing excellent experimental conditions and a suitable research environment. Additionally, it features a simulation-based medical teaching platform covering over 2,000 square meters with advanced equipment, including diverse skill training rooms for internal medicine and simulated operating rooms, ensuring the smooth progress of teaching activities. The hospital has established the Geriatric Medicine Research Institute of Guangzhou Medical University, a comprehensive research institution integrating clinical practice, research, teaching, and translation. Currently, it has several doctoral and master's supervisors. Over the past three years, it has led multiple research projects, including those under the National Key R&D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation, the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, and the Guangzhou Key R&D Program, publishing over 10 high-quality papers in journals such as Nature Aging and Cell Death & Disease. In the future, the hospital aims to build a full-life-cycle medical-elderly care service center for the elderly, a training center for geriatric specialists, a research and technology innovation center for geriatric medicine, and a national regional medical center for geriatric medicine, ultimately becoming a high-level national demonstration geriatric hospital.
