The Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University

The Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University is a large tertiary first-class general hospital with a history of over 120 years, integrating medical care, teaching, and scientific research. It also houses the Guangzhou Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Guangzhou Critical Maternal Rescue Center. With comprehensive disciplines, distinctive specialized departments, strong technical expertise, and significant multidisciplinary advantages, the hospital enjoys a high reputation in Guangdong Province and the South China region. Currently, the hospital has two campuses. The main campus (Liwan Campus) has 1,000 approved beds, 50 clinical departments, and 14 medical technology departments. The annual outpatient and emergency visits exceed 2 million, and annual discharged patients exceed 45,000. The Huangpu Campus Phase I has 500 beds, with outpatient and emergency and maternal and child health service capacity of 550,000 visits per year, an average daily outpatient volume of about 1,500 visits, and inpatient service capacity of 30,000 patients per year. It was put into use in September 2022, with Phase II under planning. The hospital has over 2,400 employees, including more than 410 with senior professional titles. It currently has over 60 doctoral supervisors and over 140 master's supervisors, and has established a practical teaching base centered on the Third Clinical College. The obstetrics department is a national key clinical specialty, the Guangdong Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center for Major Obstetric Diseases Prevention and Control, and a key discipline of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education. In 1998, the Guangzhou Critical Maternal Rescue Center was established, which is the earliest established, most widely networked, and most technically robust maternal rescue center in South China, with a successful rescue rate for critical maternal cases as high as 98%. In 1989, the Reproductive Medicine Department achieved the birth of the second test-tube baby in China and the first and second in Guangdong Province. It is one of the first units in the country to obtain the Ministry of Health's approval for assisted reproductive technology, and is authorized to carry out preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) projects. It is one of the largest, most successful, and longest-standing reproductive medicine centers in the province. Currently, the departments of orthopedics, gynecology, neonatology, and clinical nursing are key clinical specialties in Guangdong Province; disciplines such as gastroenterology and cardiology are well regarded in Guangdong Province and Guangzhou. Single-port laparoscopy and minimally invasive spine surgery are distinctive diagnostic and treatment technologies of the hospital. The hospital's "Chest Pain Center" and "Stroke Center" undertake rapid treatment of acute and critical patients in the region. The hospital possesses high-level medical research platforms such as the Guangzhou Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Guangzhou Clinical Medicine Research Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology. It currently has several provincial and municipal key laboratories and research centers, including the Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Gynecological and Obstetric Diseases and the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Major Obstetric Diseases, as well as one academician workstation. In the past five years, it has received more than 500 funded projects from the National Key R&D Program and the National Natural Science Foundation. In the 2023 China Medical School/Hospital Science and Technology Metrics (STEM) and the 2019-2023 five-year total science and technology metrics, obstetrics and gynecology ranked 13th nationwide and first in Guangdong Province. Additionally, ultrasound medicine ranked 35th nationwide, nursing ranked 39th nationwide, and critical care medicine entered the top 100 nationwide.
