Shanghai University of Finance and Economics

Shanghai University of Finance and Economics originated from the business program founded by Nanjing Higher Normal School in 1917, with Yang Xingfo, a famous social activist and patriotic democratic figure, serving as the director of the business program. In 1921, following the implementation of the plan to establish National Southeast University based on Nanjing Higher Normal School, the business program was expanded, reorganized, and relocated to Shanghai, establishing the Shanghai Business University of National Southeast University, which was the earliest business university in China's educational history, with renowned educator Guo Bingwen as its president and famous economist Ma Yinchu as the dean of academic affairs.
In 1932, it was independently established as the National Shanghai Institute of Commerce, then the only national undergraduate institution specializing in business. In 1950, the school was renamed Shanghai Institute of Finance and Economics, with famous economists Sun Yefang and Yao Nai serving as presidents in succession. In 1985, the school was renamed Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. In 2000, the university was transferred from the Ministry of Finance to the leadership of the Ministry of Education. In 2012, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the Shanghai Municipal Government signed an agreement to jointly build Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. After a century of heritage, in 2017, the university entered the national "Double First-Class" initiative, opening a new chapter in striving towards the goal of building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics!
