Shanghai Municipal General Institute

Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute (Group) Co., Ltd., abbreviated as "SMEDI", was founded in 1954 and is one of the earliest municipal design institutes in China. Adhering to the corporate spirit of "Scientific Innovation, Integrity and Dedication", the institute contributes to society and benefits people's livelihood. After more than half a century of development, its comprehensive strength ranks first among its peers nationwide. In 2008, it obtained the first batch of national Class A comprehensive qualification certificates for engineering design, enabling it to undertake engineering design in 21 industries including municipal engineering.

The group currently has specialties including water supply, drainage, roads, bridges, comprehensive transportation, structures, hydraulic engineering, rail transit, underground space development, landscape architecture, architecture, solid waste, electrical instruments, equipment, HVAC and power, geotechnical engineering, engineering surveying, technical economics, general contracting of engineering, and urban-rural planning. It has 16 design institutes, 8 holding or participating companies, and 20 branch offices in other regions. It has established an R&D center, an information technology center, and a general engineering contracting department. Currently, it employs over 2,000 staff members, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and five National Design Masters, among other elite talents. It has also established academician studios, master studios, and a postdoctoral workstation.

Since its establishment, the group has completed nearly 7,000 survey, design, and consulting projects of various types. Representative completed projects include the Nanpu Bridge, Lupu Bridge, Donghai Bridge, Shanghai Middle Ring Line (Puxi Section), Shanghai Gonghexin Road Elevated Road, Pudong Maglev Demonstration Operation Line, Shanghai Changqiao Water Plant, Bailonggang Urban Wastewater Treatment Plant, Shanghai Laogang Domestic Waste Sanitary Landfill Phase IV, and Shanghai Fort Bay Wetland Forest Park, among others. Over the years, it has won nearly 500 awards, including national, ministerial, and municipal science and technology progress awards, the Zhan Tianyou Civil Engineering Grand Prize, and outstanding survey, design, and consulting awards. It holds nearly 200 patents. It has successively obtained the Shanghai Engineering Survey and Design Comprehensive Quality Management Qualification Certificate and the Shanghai Quality System Audit Center GB/T19001-ISO9001 quality certification, and has been designated as a Shanghai High-tech Enterprise and a Shanghai Patent Work Demonstration Enterprise, and has been rated as a National Advanced Collective in Science and Technology Progress.

The group adheres to the principle of "grasping both ends", simultaneously advancing the construction of spiritual civilization and corporate culture alongside material civilization construction, with remarkable results. It has received numerous honors and titles, including the National "May Day" Labor Certificate, National "Model Staff Home", National Advanced Unit for Grassroots Political Thought Work in the Construction System, Advanced Unit for Corporate Culture Construction, Outstanding Contribution Unit for Pairing Support in the Ministry of Construction's Response to Ice and Snow Disasters, Advanced Collective for Earthquake Relief by the Ministry of Construction, Shanghai Civilized Unit (eight consecutive times), Shanghai Golden Cup Company (four times), Shanghai Enterprise with the Most Satisfied Employees (three consecutive times), Shanghai Advanced Unit for Open and Democratic Management of Factory Affairs, and Corporate Integrity Construction Award.
