医院始建于1888年，是我国*早建立的西医院之一,经过137年的积淀，现已发展成为集医疗、教学、科研及预防保健为一体的大型综合性三级甲等医院。医院设有43个临床学科，11个医技科室，拥有2个国家临床重点专科、19个省临床重点专科、4个省中医药重点专科和23个市临床重点专科、4个市临床特色专科、9个市中医药重点专科年门、急诊量达376.9万人次，出院人次15.5万，手术6.2万台次。医院同时也是国家博士后科研工作站和广东省博士工作站，现有博士后合作导师20人，博士生导师24人，硕士生导师107人，高校兼职教授、副教授、讲师和教师308人。2021年3月，医院入选广东省高水平医院重点建设医院，2023年4月，正式挂牌成为南方医科大学第十附属医院。
