Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co., Ltd. is located at No. 2 Gaoxiong Road by the Huangpu River, with its predecessor being the Jiangnan Machine Manufacturing Bureau established by the Qing Dynasty on June 3, 1865. It was a large national enterprise born during the Westernization Movement, integrating military industry, scientific research, and shipbuilding. It is the birthplace of China's national industry, the cradle of China's industrial workers, a place where early revolutionary activities of Chinese Communists took place, and a pioneer in China's opening up to the world.
Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co., Ltd., restructured from Jiangnan Shipyard, is one of the top 500 enterprises in China. Since the reform and opening up, it has built hundreds of thousands of tons of high-tech export ships for more than ten countries including the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Norway, and regions such as Hong Kong, achieving remarkable results in export earnings. The "Yuanwang" ocean-going scientific research vessels and advanced naval vessels built by the company have made significant contributions to naval construction, the aerospace industry, and scientific research.
With the approach of the 2010 World Expo, Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Company is about to relocate to Changxing Island.
On July 24, 2003, CSSC Group and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government signed a cooperation memorandum on issues related to the layout adjustment of shipyards in the Shanghai area, which clearly stated that Shanghai would provide 8 kilometers of coastline on Changxing Island in the near future for the relocation of shipyards along the Huangpu River under CSSC Group. The first phase of the CSSC Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding Base on Changxing Island has 3.7 kilometers of coastline, covering an area of about 5.6 million square meters. Here, a large shipyard will be planned, developed, and constructed with high starting points, high standards, and high requirements, integrating military and civilian use, surface and underwater operations, and a product range including steel structures. It will have four large dry docks, with the largest dry dock measuring 580 meters long and 120 meters wide, with an annual shipbuilding capacity of 4.5 million tons.
