[Summary] Serving the national epidemic prevention cause
The development history of China National Biotec Group represents the history of biological products development in China. It successively developed and produced China's earliest vaccines for cowpox, cholera, typhoid, rabies, and diphtheria antitoxin, and isolated the first strain of penicillin in China. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the biological product research institutes under CNBG have undertaken the production and supply of biological products for the prevention, control, and eradication of infectious diseases, making significant contributions to the eradication of smallpox, the elimination of indigenous cases of polio, and the control of measles, diphtheria, pertussis, Japanese encephalitis, meningococcal meningitis, hepatitis B, and other infectious diseases.
CNBG has strong industrialization capabilities. It has established production bases in six major cities, with nearly 100 production lines that meet GMP standards. It can produce more than 200 types of biological and pharmaceutical products for prevention, treatment, and diagnosis, including 24 national Class I and II new drugs. Of the 41 vaccines that can be produced in China to prevent infections from 26 viruses and bacteria, CNBG can produce 34 vaccines to prevent infections from 24 viruses and bacteria. It is the enterprise with the largest variety and the highest output of vaccines and blood products in China.
CNBG spares no effort to serve the national immunization program, undertaking the production of over 80% of vaccines used in the national immunization program. At the same time, it leverages its technological advantages to focus on the research, production, and upgrading of equipment technology for major epidemic prevention and control products. It has made important contributions in the fight against SARS, earthquake disaster relief, and the response to the global H1N1 influenza pandemic.
CNBG possesses strong scientific research capabilities. It has a team of biotechnology experts, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, more than 70 experts in new drug evaluation appointed by the National Medical Products Administration, more than 10 experts in evaluation committees of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and over 170 experts receiving special government allowances. CNBG is also one of the first units in the country authorized to confer doctoral and master's degrees, with 1 doctoral program, 5 master's programs, and 5 post-doctoral workstations. From 1989 to 2010, it trained a total of 632 master's students and 47 doctoral students.
CNBG has achieved fruitful scientific research results. It has undertaken several key projects, including the national 863 Program and the "Eleventh Five-Year" National Science and Technology Support Program. More than ten research projects have filled domestic gaps, multiple achievements have independent intellectual property rights, and 26 achievements have won first or second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, while more than 180 have won provincial and ministerial awards. In 2008, it was named one of the first batch of "Innovative Enterprises" in China by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, and the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.
