China UnionPay was established in March 2002. Approved by the State Council and the People's Bank of China, it is China's bank card association, headquartered in Shanghai.
As China's bank card association, China UnionPay occupies the core and pivotal position in China's bank card industry and plays a fundamental role in the development of China's bank card industry. Through the UnionPay interbank transaction clearing system, banks have achieved interconnection between systems, enabling bank cards to be used across banks, regions, and borders. On the basis of building and operating the UnionPay interbank transaction clearing system and achieving universal bank card interconnection, China UnionPay actively joins hands with commercial banks and other industry parties to promote unified UnionPay card standards and specifications, create an independent bank card brand; promote the development and application of bank cards; maintain order in the bank card acceptance market; and prevent bank card risks. Through the UnionPay interbank transaction clearing system, interconnection and resource sharing among commercial bank systems are achieved, ensuring the use of bank cards across banks, regions, and borders.
