Walmart was founded in 1962 in Arkansas by Mr. Sam Walton, a legendary figure in American retail. After nearly fifty years of development, Walmart has become the world's largest private employer and chain retailer, repeatedly ranking first on Fortune magazine's World 500 list and being elected as the most valuable brand. Currently, Walmart operates over 10,303 stores in 27 countries, under 69 brands, with a global workforce of over 2.2 million employees, and serves 200 million customers weekly. In fiscal year 2012 (February 1, 2011 to January 31, 2012), sales reached $443.9 billion, an increase of 5.9% over fiscal year 2010. In fiscal year 2012, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation donated a cumulative total of $341.8 million in cash and $616.3 million in in-kind contributions. In 2012, Walmart again topped the Fortune World 500 ranking.
Walmart in China
Walmart entered China in 1996, opening its first Walmart Supercenter and Sam's Club in Shenzhen. Currently, Walmart operates various formats and brands in China, including Supercenters, Sam's Clubs, and neighborhood stores. As of July 31, 2012, it had opened 379 stores in 145 cities across 21 provinces and 4 municipalities, creating over 100,174 job opportunities nationwide.
With China's accession to the WTO and the liberalization of policies on foreign investment in the retail industry, Walmart hopes to leverage this background to achieve faster and greater development across China. Walmart introduces advanced retail technology and innovative retail concepts from around the world, stimulating competition in the retail industry while driving the common development of local businesses.
Just like Walmart globally, Walmart in China adheres to the company's fine traditions, focusing on running every store well, serving every customer, and always providing quality, low-priced products with a wide selection and friendly customer service.
