Introduction to Merck globally and in China
Merck is a leading technology company focused on three major fields: healthcare, life science, and performance materials. Founded in 1668, Merck is the oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company in the world. The Merck family, as the founder, still holds the majority of the company's shares, and the company is one of the 30 largest German enterprises listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Merck, headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany, owns the name and brand "Merck" globally, with the only exceptions being in Canada and the United States, where Merck operates under the names EMD Serono, MilliporeSigma, and EMD Performance Materials.
Merck has a development history of 87 years in China, with the first subsidiary established in Shanghai as early as 1933.
China is one of Merck's most important strategic countries globally and has become a global innovation center for Merck. In recent years, Merck's investments in healthcare and life science businesses in Nantong and performance materials business in Shanghai have reached 170 million euros, 80 million euros, and 44 million euros, respectively. Additionally, Merck has established a global biopharmaceutical R&D center in Beijing, and in Shanghai, it has set up the China Center for Display Materials R&D, the China Center for Appearance Technology Application R&D, the China Center for OLED Technology, the Life Science Laboratory, and the Asia-Pacific BioReliance® End-to-End Bioprocess Development Center. In Suzhou, Merck has established the China Center for Lithography Materials R&D.

Merck Pharmaceuticals (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd., located in Nantong Economic and Technological Development Zone, Jiangsu, with a total investment of 650 million RMB, is our first pharmaceutical factory in China and will also become our second largest pharmaceutical factory globally. This factory will primarily produce our branded products listed in China's National Essential Medicines List, covering various disease areas such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and thyroid dysfunction. The first phase of the plant covers 40,000 square meters, with the second phase expanding by 20,000 square meters. Construction began in 2014, and production was officially launched in 2017.
