南通市第三人民医院始建于1962年，前身为南通市传染病防治院。医院在全国率先提出并成功实践“以专科为重点、综合学科协调发展”的专科医院建设创新理论，逐渐发展成为一所集医、教、研于一体的具有显着专科特色的综合性医院。医院现为江苏省卫生厅命名的**甲等医院，是南通大学附属南通第三医院、南京中医药大学南通中西医结合临床医学院、南通市老年病医院，全国综合医院中医药工作示范单位、*住院医师规范化培训基地，附设南通市肝病研究所*。
