AU Optronics is one of the world's top three companies in the design, research and development, and manufacturing of Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Displays (TFT-LCD). Originally established as Acer Display Technology in August 1996, it was renamed AU Optronics after merging with Unipac Optoelectronics in 2001, and further merged with Quanta Display in 2006. Following these mergers, AUO's global market share for large-size panels exceeded 19%, and its sixth-generation line total capacity ranks among the world's largest. AUO is also a TFT-LCD manufacturer publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

AUO's product line covers TFT-LCD panels ranging from 1.2 inches to 65 inches, with applications including desktop monitors, notebook computers, LCD TVs, automotive displays, industrial computers, digital cameras, digital camcorders, handheld DVDs, handheld game consoles, and mobile phones. It is also one of the few manufacturers globally to offer a complete range of small, medium, and large size products. In 2008, AUO achieved a revenue of USD 12.9 billion and now employs over 40,000 people worldwide, with operations in Taiwan (China), the United States, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Mainland China.

AU Optronics was the first manufacturer in Taiwan to mass-produce using 3.5G, 4G, 5G, 6G, and 7.5G production lines. Its 8.5G line under construction is expected to begin mass production in the second half of 2009. AUO's competitive advantage lies in its complete layout of multiple-generation production lines, enabling flexible adjustments to support various applications, thus seizing market opportunities and realizing synergistic benefits.

AU Optronics (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. was established in 2001, located in Suzhou Industrial Park, covering an area of 32 hectares (480 mu), with a total investment of RMB 4 billion. It currently has more than 15,000 employees (as of April 2009) and is one of the largest foreign-invested enterprises in the Suzhou Industrial Park.
