Walmart was founded by Sam Walton, a legendary figure in American retail, in Arkansas in 1962. After more than fifty years of development, Walmart has become the world's largest private employer and chain retailer, ranking first on Fortune magazine's World 500 list multiple times and being named the most valuable brand.
Walmart entered China in 1996 and opened its first Walmart Supercenter and Sam's Club in Shenzhen. After more than 20 years of development in China, we now have approximately 100,000 employees.
Currently, Walmart operates various business formats and brands in China, including Walmart Supercenters, Sam's Club, and Walmart Smart Selection supermarkets. Walmart has opened more than 400 stores and about 20 distribution centers in over 180 cities nationwide. Since entering China, Walmart has served 7 billion customer visits.
Walmart has always adhered to local procurement in its operations in China. Currently, Walmart China has established cooperative relationships with more than 7,000 suppliers, and over 95% of the products sold are locally sourced.
Walmart China places great emphasis on talent localization and encourages talent diversity, especially the cultivation and development of female employees and management. At present, over 99.9% of Walmart China's employees come from local Chinese talent, all store general managers are Chinese local talents, and about 66% of employees are female, with nearly 50% of the management team being women. In 2009, the company established the "Walmart China Women's Leadership Development Committee" to accelerate women's career development. In early 2013, Walmart founded the Walmart Women's Leadership Academy to better promote the growth and development of women in the company.
With the current good momentum, Walmart will continue to expand its investment in China, and in the future, both online and offline operations will progress together to provide customers with better services. At the same time, Walmart will continue to upgrade existing stores, strengthen food safety, and achieve win-win development with local suppliers. Walmart hopes to better adapt to the new normal of the Chinese economy, create more employment opportunities, and become a trusted corporate citizen while growing with the Chinese economy.
Walmart Supercenters have a business area of about 5,000 to over 10,000 square meters, offering more than 20,000 kinds of products including fresh food, clothing, home appliances, and dry goods, providing customers with a unique "one-stop shopping" experience. Meanwhile, as anchor stores, they attract customer traffic to adjacent small retailers, restaurants, and shops.
Walmart Supercenters not only focus on food safety and product quality but also strive to achieve the goal of "saving customers money so they can live better." Each Supercenter makes efforts to review more products for customers and actively promotes "worry-free prices" nationwide to save consumers from price comparison. Additionally, through market research, they select product portfolios preferred by consumers, coupled with continuously improved display methods, and promote store renovations to enhance the shopping experience, meeting customer needs while driving overall sales growth.
