湖南科学技术出版社成立于1979年，2008年12月转制为湖南科学技术出版社有限责任公司，系中南出版传媒集团股份有限公司下属子公司。自建社以来出版了多种在社会上具有相当影响力的优秀图书，如《时间简史》、《世界是平的》、《设计学概论》、《此生未完成》、《医学临床“三基”训练》等系列作品，在科普、护理等细分图书领域的市场占有率连续多年位居全国首位。2006年被评为中国新闻出版系统先进集体；2007年，荣获中国出版政府奖“先进出版单位奖”；2009年被评为中国科技类出版社一级出版社，成为百佳出版单位。
