ZJU Planning Institute

Founded in 1994, the Urban and Rural Planning and Design Institute of Zhejiang University, as a wholly state-owned enterprise of Zhejiang University, a prestigious domestic university, relies on the century-old Zhejiang University and adheres to the philosophy of "Seeking Truth, Innovation, Collaboration, and Practicality." Fully leveraging the university's advantageous resources in science, technology, talent, information, and culture, it has grown into a comprehensive planning and design research institution integrating scientific research innovation and planning practice. The current director is Professor Yang Jianjun, a doctoral supervisor in the urban and rural planning discipline. The institute currently has nearly 280 employees, of whom more than half hold senior or intermediate professional titles, and over 50 are various registered professionals, forming a team with comprehensive disciplines and strong capabilities. The institute consists of seven planning and design departments and five studios, including the Architecture and Landscape Branch, the Transportation and Municipal Branch, and the Jiangxi Branch. It also has the Urban and Rural Planning Research and Innovation Center established by the discipline, strengthening the integration of industry, academia, and research. Additionally, the American Planning Association (APA) China Office is located in our institute, expanding international cooperation in the fields of urban planning and land use planning research. The institute holds the Grade A qualification for urban and rural planning formulation, as well as related design qualifications for architectural engineering design, landscape architecture engineering design, tourism planning design, and cultural relic protection planning engineering design. We provide comprehensive services including planning, design, scientific research, international exchange, and educational training, offering holistic solutions from research to planning, from urban and rural space to architecture and landscape, and from design to implementation, tailored to client needs. Our business expertise covers regional development, comprehensive planning, regulatory detailed planning, urban design, transportation and municipal infrastructure, tourism, regional sea use, architectural design, and landscape architecture. We maintain strong competitiveness in planning compilation, project consulting, and architectural and landscape engineering design, as well as notable achievements in specialized fields such as regional planning, small town and rural planning, science and technology industrial parks, cultural and creative parks, health and elderly care real estate, and agricultural and ecological planning. Leveraging strong technical strength and leading innovation capabilities, the institute has achieved a series of remarkable accomplishments. Many projects have received commendations from national leaders and the Ministry of Construction, as well as praise from local governments and clients, and the institute has become a cooperative research base for policy research with the Hangzhou Municipal People's Government Research Office. Awarded projects include: National Excellent Design Silver Award; First Prize for Excellent Design from the Ministry of Construction; First Prize for Excellent Survey and Design of Zhejiang Province; Second Prize for National Excellent Urban and Rural Planning Design; and First Prize for Excellent Planning and Design at the provincial department level. The institute has also undertaken scientific research projects from the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Education, and various local governments, and participated in the formulation of technical specifications and industry standards related to urban and rural planning. The institute will continue to uphold a high sense of responsibility and mission, providing diversified and clustered design services centered on planning, and with an international and forward-looking perspective, strive to build a first-class design institution characterized by academic research and innovation.
