Nanchang * Hospital (The Third Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University) is a comprehensive Grade 3A (tertiary) hospital under the Nanchang municipal government, integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, and preventive healthcare. It is one of the earliest four Grade 3A hospitals in Jiangxi Province.
The hospital has a long history, tracing its origins to 1934 as the Jiangxi Provincial Medical Office. In May 1949, the hospital was taken over by a military representative of the People's Liberation Army and renamed "Nanchang Municipal People's Hospital." At that time, it had only a medical office and an administrative office, with just 24 beds and 7 doctors.
In October 1950, the inpatient department was completed, with 100 beds and departments of internal medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, and obstetrics and gynecology.
In the 1950s, the hospital's surgery department could perform subtotal gastrectomy, cholecystectomy, partial hepatectomy and pancreatectomy, subtotal thyroidectomy for hyperthyroidism, common bile duct drainage, management of extensive burns, and radical mastectomy. The orthopedics department could perform surgery for femoral neck fractures and intervertebral disc procedures, and the obstetrics and gynecology department could perform extensive hysterectomy for cervical cancer. Twenty percent of newborns in Nanchang were born here. In 1956, the radiology department developed its own tomographic kymography device and upright and recumbent automatic film-changing devices, which won awards at the National Science and Technology Conference.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the hospital was able to independently perform cardiac surgery, total laryngectomy, and left and right heart catheterization. In the 1980s, the combined hepatobiliary-pelvic approach for treating biliary and pancreatic diseases developed by the general surgery department reached the domestic advanced level, exerting considerable influence among peers nationwide, and patients from all over the country came seeking treatment. In the 1990s, the hospital introduced the first DSA machine in the province, pioneering interventional treatment for coronary heart disease in Jiangxi Province.
It is precisely because the hospital has had generations of medical experts such as orthopedic specialist Luo Bingzhong, general surgery specialists Xu Fanxun, Zhu Yan, and Wu Zhiquan, thoracic surgery specialists Zhang Lin, pediatric specialist Cheng Xiansi, internal medicine specialists Wang Zhongmo, Guo Weiren, and Liao Gang, obstetrics and gynecology specialist Fan Huiqing, radiology specialist Wu Xinjian, and nursing specialists Tang Bing and Zhang Jinyuan, whose tireless exploration and dedicated efforts were passed down from generation to generation, that the hospital enjoyed the highest reputation in Jiangxi in the last century, with its fame spreading throughout the country.
The hospital has always been a base for internship teaching and training in medical care and nursing in Jiangxi. In 1999, the hospital became the first non-directly affiliated hospital of Jiangxi Medical College—the Third Affiliated Hospital of Jiangxi Medical College. Starting in 2003, it successively undertook part of the clinical theory courses in general practice, medical imaging, and anesthesiology for Jiangxi Medical College (which became the Medical College of Nanchang University after 2005), as well as clinical theory courses for two majors, preventive medicine and medical laboratory technology, of the School of Public Health.
In June 2016, the hospital signed a deepened cooperation agreement with Nanchang University, launching the establishment of the Third School of Clinical Medicine based on our hospital, independently enrolling undergraduate students in clinical medicine. At present, it has received 100 students in two cohorts of the clinical medicine major. More than 70 graduate students are currently enrolled.
Today, driven by the "three carriages" of medical care, education, and scientific research, the hospital has entered the fast lane of "building a renowned hospital integrating medical care, education, and research." The hospital currently has 1,500 authorized beds and 1,226 open beds, with more than 900,000 outpatient visits and more than 46,000 inpatient admissions annually.
