China Merchants Bank (CMB), abbreviated as Zhaohang, is the first joint-stock commercial bank in China wholly owned by corporate legal persons. Founded on April 8, 1987, by China Merchants Group Limited (Hong Kong), it is the sixth largest bank in mainland China and one of the 'Eight Banks and Five Insurers' among Chinese-funded financial stocks in Hong Kong. Its head office is located in Futian District, Shenzhen. On April 9, 2002, CMB's A-shares were listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. On September 8, 2006, CMB began its public offering in Hong Kong, issuing approximately 2.2 billion H-shares, raising HK$20 billion, and was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on September 22. Its net capital exceeds RMB 290 billion, and total assets exceed RMB 4.4 trillion.
CMB has 113 branches and 943 sub-branches in over 110 cities in mainland China, one branch-level specialized institution (Credit Card Center), one representative office, and 2,330 self-service banking centers. In Hong Kong, it has one branch (Hong Kong Branch); in the United States, it has a New York branch and a representative office; in Singapore, it has a Singapore branch; and in London and Taipei, it has representative offices. Additionally, in mainland China, it wholly owns CMB Financial Leasing Co., Ltd. and China Merchants Fund Management Co., Ltd., holds a 50% stake in Cigna & CMB Life Insurance Co., Ltd., and in Hong Kong wholly owns Wing Lung Bank and CMB International Capital Corporation Limited.
CMB's development goal is to become a leading retail bank. In July 1995, it launched the bank card 'All-In-One Card', and in September 1999, it launched China's first online banking platform 'One Net', which became a widely used online payment tool for many enterprises and e-commerce websites, to some extent promoting the development of China's e-commerce. On April 2, 2015, China Merchants Group Limited was planning major matters. Given the significant uncertainties involved, to ensure fair information disclosure, protect investors' interests, and avoid abnormal fluctuations in the company's stock price, upon the company's application, its stock has been suspended from trading since the opening of the market on April 3, 2015.
