The Company, originally named Shanghai Petrochemical Co., Ltd., was established on June 21, 1993. The Company is a joint-stock company formed as part of the restructuring of Shanghai Petrochemical General Works, a state-owned enterprise. Shanghai Petrochemical is directly supervised and controlled by China Petrochemical Corporation ("Sinopec Group"). Sinopec Group completed its restructuring on February 25, 2000. Upon completion of the restructuring, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation was established. As part of this restructuring, Sinopec Group transferred its 4,000,000,000 state-owned legal person shares of the Company, representing 55.56% of the Company's total share capital, to China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation. Consequently, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation became the largest shareholder of the Company. On October 12, 2000, the Company changed its name to Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co., Ltd.
