宁波第四中学是浙江省一级特色示范高中，一所具有174年悠久历史的宁波市教育局直属普通高级中学。其发展演变过程可以概括为“一个源头、两条干流、三条支流”。“一个源头”是指美国长老会麦嘉缔1845年创办的崇信义塾，它是四中办学史上的*早源头，后几经曲折演变，于1912年发展成为崇信中学。“两条干流”，一条是美国浸礼会于1855年在西大街创办的私塾，于1912年发展成为浸会中学，1923年浸会中学与崇信中学合并成四明中学；另一条是英国循道公会于1860年在解放北路竹林巷创办的私塾，于1930年发展成为斐迪中学（当时已迁至江北泗洲塘）。1935年，经三方教会协议，四明中学和斐迪中学合并，取名浙东中学。1952年12月，市人民政府接管浙东中学，改名为宁波第四中学。“三条支流”，即1949年10月，益三中学并入；1964年宁波市劳动局技校并入；1965年江北初中并入，才汇合发展形成今天的宁波四中。2003年8月由江北新马路迁至江北姚江岸文教路新址，2008年7月宁波市教育结构重新布局，联丰中学并入宁波四中。
